Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has admitted that defending the FIFA World Cup title will be a difficult task as the reigning champions prepare to begin their campaign against Algeria on June 17.
The South American giants enter the tournament as defending champions after securing their third World Cup title in Qatar, where they defeated France in a dramatic penalty shootout final more than three years ago.
Since lifting the trophy in 2022, Scaloni’s side has maintained impressive form, suffering only four defeats across international friendlies, the 2024 Copa America, and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Argentina have also won each of their last five matches, including a convincing 3-0 victory over Iceland in their most recent outing. Their strong performances in the build-up to the tournament have helped them climb to the top of the latest FIFA world rankings.
Speaking after the win over Iceland, Scaloni acknowledged the challenge of winning consecutive World Cup titles but expressed confidence in the commitment and determination of his players. He stressed that while success is never guaranteed, the team will give everything on the pitch throughout the competition.
Argentina have been drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria, and Jordan. The three-time world champions are aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.
