NYSC DG Urges Corps Members to Acquire Entrepreneurial Skills for Financial Independence

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has encouraged Corps Members to embrace entrepreneurship and vocational training as reliable pathways to financial self-reliance and long-term economic stability.

General Nafiu gave the advice during an interactive session with the 2026 Batch 'B' Stream I Corps Members deployed to Niger State, who are currently participating in their Orientation Course at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja. The Corps Members are using the Abuja camp due to the ongoing renovation of the Niger State NYSC Orientation Camp.

Addressing the participants, the NYSC Director-General urged them to make the most of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a vital initiative designed to equip young graduates with practical skills needed to succeed in today's challenging economic environment.

He advised the Corps Members not to depend solely on their monthly allowance or the hope of securing white-collar employment after completing national service. Instead, he encouraged them to acquire vocational and entrepreneurial skills that can provide sustainable sources of income.

According to General Nafiu, the one-year national service presents an excellent opportunity for Corps Members to learn marketable skills through the various vocational programmes available under the SAED initiative.

He further encouraged them to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset by creating multiple income streams and preparing themselves to become job creators rather than job seekers, thereby contributing to Nigeria's economic growth and development.

The Director-General also advised the Corps Members to build meaningful relationships during the orientation programme, noting that friendships established during the service year often develop into valuable professional, business and leadership networks that can benefit them in the future.

He urged them to remain disciplined throughout their service year, take advantage of opportunities for personal development and continuous learning, and always use the official NYSC administrative channels to report complaints or concerns instead of unofficial platforms. He assured them that legitimate issues brought through the proper channels would receive prompt attention.

General Nafiu further reminded the Corps Members to uphold the ideals of the NYSC by demonstrating integrity, responsibility and dedication at their various places of primary assignment.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Niger State, Mrs. Martina Shuaibu Ibrahim, informed the Director-General that a total of 783 Corps Members had been successfully registered for the orientation exercise. She disclosed that the figure comprises 296 male and 487 female Corps Members.

Mrs. Ibrahim stated that the orientation programme has been progressing smoothly through the collaborative efforts of the NYSC management, the Federal Capital Territory Secretariat and camp officials.

She also commended the Corps Members for their discipline and active participation in camp activities, describing their conduct throughout the orientation exercise as exemplary.
