The Peace Corps of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to formally integrate the organisation into the country's ongoing security reforms, saying its nationwide network of trained personnel is well-positioned to strengthen grassroots security and peace-building efforts.
The organisation stated that it currently has more than 187,000 trained members spread across 93 per cent of Nigeria's 774 local government areas, making it one of the largest volunteer-based youth organisations capable of supporting community policing, conflict prevention and public safety initiatives.
According to the Peace Corps, its members are prepared to work alongside existing security agencies in promoting peace, safeguarding communities and assisting government efforts to address security challenges at the grassroots level.
The organisation also renewed its appeal for the speedy passage of the Peace Corps Establishment Bill, stressing that the proposed legislation would provide the legal framework required for it to contribute more effectively to national development and internal security.
It maintained that its mission is not to replace the Nigerian Armed Forces or the Nigeria Police Force, but to complement their operations by providing community-based support, youth engagement and peace-building services across the country.
The Peace Corps expressed confidence that its extensive presence in local communities would enhance intelligence gathering, civic education, conflict resolution and other non-combat security responsibilities that would allow conventional security agencies to focus on more specialised operations.
The organisation urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to give urgent consideration to its request, insisting that the passage of the establishment bill would unlock the full potential of its trained personnel in supporting national security, youth empowerment and sustainable peace.
The Peace Corps reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with government institutions and other stakeholders in building a safer and more peaceful Nigeria through lawful, community-driven initiatives.
