.....Minister says landmark initiative will retain Nigeria's sporting talents, deepen human capital development and position sports as a major driver of economic growth
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, alongside the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has unveiled the National Sports and Education Excellence Programme (N-SEEP), a landmark national initiative designed to integrate quality education with elite sports development, nurture globally competitive athletes, create sustainable career opportunities for young Nigerians, and position sports as a strategic driver of national development.
The programme, a collaborative initiative birthed by the previously constituted joint-committee between the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Sports Commission under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, will establish Sports and Education Centres of Excellence across selected tertiary institutions, creating a structured pathway for discovering, developing and retaining Nigeria's sporting talents while equipping them with internationally recognised academic qualifications and professional skills.
Speaking during the committee’s presentation in Abuja, Dr. Alausa described the initiative as one of the most transformative reforms in Nigeria's education sector, noting that it reflects the Federal Government's determination to unlock the country's immense sporting potential while preparing young Nigerians for productive careers beyond active competition.
He explained that the programme is designed not only to produce sporting champions, but also to develop highly skilled professionals capable of driving growth across every segment of the sports industry.
The future of sports lies not only in winning competitions, but in developing people. Through this initiative, we are producing athletes who will also become coaches, sports scientists, physiotherapists, administrators, entrepreneurs, researchers and innovators. We are investing in human capital that will continue to serve our nation long after competitive careers have ended.
The Minister said N-SEEP addresses a long-standing gap in Nigeria's education and sports sectors by ensuring that talented young Nigerians no longer have to choose between academic excellence and sporting success. Instead, the initiative creates an enabling environment where students can pursue world-class education alongside high-performance sports, empowering them to compete internationally while building lifelong careers.
Dr. Alausa said the establishment of Sports and Education Centres of Excellence, alongside the gradual integration of structured sports development pathways into basic and senior secondary education, will expand opportunities for millions of young Nigerians, promote discipline and teamwork, reduce youth involvement in crime and social vices, and strengthen national cohesion.
He noted that sports remains one of the world's fastest-growing industries and that Nigeria must intentionally position itself to benefit from its enormous economic potential.
For too long, many of our gifted athletes have sought opportunities abroad because we lacked a structured system that combines education with elite sports development. N-SEEP changes that narrative. We are building world-class institutions where Nigerian talents can learn, train and succeed at home while earning globally recognised qualifications.
The Minister added that the programme will also develop the skilled workforce required to support Nigeria's expanding sports ecosystem in areas such as sports medicine, rehabilitation, sports science, coaching, facility management, sports technology, event management, research, media and administration.
He said the initiative would also stimulate innovation, entrepreneurship and private sector investment, positioning sports as a significant contributor to national economic growth while creating thousands of employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
Dr. Alausa commended the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, for his visionary leadership and commitment to achieving the President’s goal for sports. He also praised the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, members of the technical committee and other stakeholders whose commitment made the initiative possible.
The Minister further expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for providing the visionary leadership and policy direction that continue to drive bold reforms across the education sector. He said the President's Renewed Hope Agenda has created an enabling environment for strategic collaboration among government institutions, making it possible to implement transformative programmes that respond to the aspirations of Nigerian youths and strengthen national development.
Earlier, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad, described the N-SEEP as a landmark reform that will redefine the relationship between education and sports in Nigeria by ensuring that talented young Nigerians excel academically while pursuing their sporting ambitions.
She noted that the initiative addresses the long-standing challenge of identifying gifted athletes without providing structured educational support and called for a flexible academic framework that accommodates the unique demands of elite athletes through adaptable academic calendars, continuous assessment and examination schedules. She also advocated greater collaboration across faculties to improve learning outcomes for student-athletes, expressing confidence that N-SEEP would become one of Nigeria's most impactful education reforms and a lasting investment in future generations.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, described the implementation of N-SEEP as a defining moment in Nigeria's drive to build a globally competitive sports industry anchored on education, innovation and strategic partnerships. He said the collaboration aligns two critical national priorities by creating an ecosystem where talented athletes can access quality education, world-class coaching and modern training facilities without leaving the country.
Dikko disclosed that the Commission is strengthening sports infrastructure across educational institutions while expanding coach education and professional certification through the National Institute for Sports. He also revealed plans to establish specialised Sports Centres of Excellence within Unity Schools, State and private schools to identify and nurture exceptional talents before they progress into participating tertiary institutions. In addition, he announced ongoing engagements with international sporting bodies, including FIFA and CAF, to secure global accreditation for sports-related academic programmes in Nigerian institutions, positioning Nigeria as a recognised destination for sports education, research and high-performance training.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, described the N-SEEP as one of Nigeria's most strategic reforms for repositioning sports as a catalyst for national development. He said the initiative moves beyond the traditional pursuit of medals by creating a sustainable pipeline of coaches, sports scientists, educators, researchers, technical officials and administrators needed to support a modern sports industry. Drawing lessons from leading sporting nations, he noted that countries such as Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and China have built their sporting success on strong educational institutions that integrate academic excellence with athlete development. He therefore urged stakeholders to move swiftly from planning to implementation, stressing that the programme offers young Nigerians an unprecedented opportunity to combine education with sporting excellence while acquiring globally competitive qualifications.
As implementation begins, the Federal Government announced that nine tertiary institutions have been selected to host the National Sports and Education Centres of Excellence: University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Benin, University of Jos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Muhammad Buhari University, Maiduguri, Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Federal College of Education, Okene, and Babcock University. Together, these institutions represent eight federal institutions and one private university, strategically positioned to drive excellence in sports education and athlete development across the country.
The first phase of implementation will commence this year at the University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Federal College of Education, Okene and Babcock University, with the remaining Centres of Excellence to be rolled out in subsequent phases.
Each participating institution will establish a Faculty of Sports Science offering internationally benchmarked academic programmes designed to meet Nigeria's growing demand for professionals in coaching, sports medicine and rehabilitation, sports science, research, sports technology and data analytics, sports business, facility management, event management and sports administration.
The programme will provide a seamless pathway for identifying and developing sporting talents from schools through tertiary education, ensuring that young Nigerians acquire both the academic qualifications and practical competencies required to thrive in the global sports industry. Beyond producing elite athletes, N-SEEP will strengthen research, innovation, entrepreneurship and workforce development while reducing Nigeria's dependence on foreign sports development systems.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the Federal Government's unwavering commitment to the successful implementation of the National Sports and Education Excellence Programme, describing it as a legacy reform that will transform education, reposition sports as a vehicle for national development and empower generations of young Nigerians to realise their full potential.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, the leadership of the National Sports Commission, members of the technical committee and all stakeholders whose dedication made the initiative possible.
The Minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would sustain the momentum of the programme through strategic partnerships, sustained investment and effective implementation to ensure that every talented child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to learn, compete and excel.
The National Sports and Education Excellence Programme is more than a reform; it is a national investment in our future. We are building a system that will nurture talent, expand opportunities, strengthen our education sector, transform sports into an engine of economic growth, and produce responsible citizens who will contribute meaningfully to national development. Together, we will build a safer, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria through education and sports.
