The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Abia State Government for its sustained support and commitment to the success of the Scheme in the state.
The NYSC DG expressed particular appreciation for the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp, the provision of a new Secretariat complex to improve the Scheme’s operations, and the upward review of allowances for Corps Members serving in the state.
General Nafiu made the commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at Umunu, Umuehim, in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
He described Abia as a peaceful and Corps Members-friendly state, noting that the number of female Corps Members deployed to the state was higher than that of their male counterparts.
He also disclosed that Abia was among the few states in the country where Corps Members are deployed to every local government area.
The NYSC Director General appealed to the Governor to ensure the implementation of the recently reviewed allowance for Corps Members. He also requested the commencement of the second phase of the renovation of the Orientation Camp.
Responding, Governor Otti congratulated General Nafiu on his appointment as the Director General of the NYSC.
The Governor recalled that his dissatisfaction with the poor condition of facilities at the NYSC Orientation Camp during his visit in 2023 prompted his administration to approve a comprehensive renovation of the camp.
According to him, the first phase of the renovation has been completed, while he has already directed that work on the second phase should commence.
Governor Otti expressed satisfaction with the 8,890 Corps Members currently serving across Abia State and called for the deployment of additional Corps Members to the state.
He stressed that Abia was not only a home for Corps Members but also welcomed everyone who came to the state to contribute to its development.
As an example, the Governor cited the Head of Service, Mr. Benson Ojeikere, who came to Abia as a Corps Member and was subsequently offered automatic employment into the state civil service after distinguishing himself during his service year.
The Governor said the example demonstrated the value the state places on Corps Members and their contributions to the development of Abia.
