The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the release of the results of the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal, with 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent of those who sat for the examination, obtaining at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
The results were released 63 days after the conclusion of the examination.
The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, disclosed this on Thursday during a press conference in Minna, Niger State.
According to him, a total of 1,378,048 candidates registered for the 2026 examination, while 1,371,992 candidates eventually participated in the exercise, which commenced on June 15 and ended on July 23, 2026.
Wushishi further revealed that 1,162,118 candidates, representing 84.70 per cent, secured five credits and above irrespective of their results in English Language and Mathematics.
The Registrar also reported a substantial reduction in examination malpractice. He said 1,406 candidates were involved in various forms of examination malpractice in 2026, compared with 3,878 cases recorded in 2025.
He explained that the latest figure represented a 64.74 per cent decline in examination malpractice.
Wushishi expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for reappointing him for a second term as NECO Registrar. He also thanked the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for the confidence reposed in his leadership.
He commended the security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), for their vigilance and support throughout the examination period.
The Registrar said the presence and intervention of the security agencies contributed to maintaining discipline, preventing misconduct and safeguarding the credibility of the examination.
He assured candidates, parents, schools and other stakeholders that NECO would continue to discharge its statutory responsibilities while sustaining efforts to protect the integrity of its examinations.
Kano Leads State Performance
Presenting the state-by-state performance, Wushishi announced Kano State as the leading state in the 2026 NECO SSCE Internal examination based on the number of candidates who obtained at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Kano recorded 74,413 candidates in the category, followed by Lagos State with 72,496 candidates. Oyo State came third with 55,543 candidates.
However, the NECO centres in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Niger Republic recorded no candidate who obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
The Registrar explained that the Southwest recorded the highest regional performance in the 2026 SSCE Internal when candidates who obtained five credits and above, irrespective of their performance in English Language and Mathematics, were considered.
The Southwest accounted for 24.600 per cent, followed by the Northwest with 22.100 per cent, North Central with 19.00 per cent, Northeast with 14.70 per cent, South-South with 10.53 per cent and Southeast with 9.07 per cent.
Wushishi said NECO prepared separate rankings covering candidates who obtained five credits and above, with classifications based on whether English Language and Mathematics were included.
The Council also produced separate performance tables based on gender.
Regional and State Performance
In the North Central zone, Benue led the state-level ranking with 3.82 per cent, followed by Nasarawa with 3.66 per cent, while other states recorded varying levels of performance.
For the Northeast, Adamawa was among the leading states, followed by Bauchi, Borno, Yobe and Gombe.
The Northwest ranking was headed by Kano, followed by Katsina, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara and Jigawa.
The Registrar also presented separate male and female performance rankings across the six geopolitical zones, reflecting differences in candidates' performance among the states.
In the Southeast, Anambra recorded the highest overall ranking at 2.92 per cent, followed by Enugu at 2.14 per cent. Ebonyi and Abia recorded 1.15 per cent and 0.57 per cent respectively.
For male candidates in the zone, Anambra led with 2.47 per cent, followed by Enugu with 1.79 per cent.
The female ranking also placed Anambra first at 3.82 per cent, while Enugu followed with 2.45 per cent.
In the South-South, Rivers State topped the ranking with 3.03 per cent, followed by Edo with 2.17 per cent, Delta with 1.84 per cent, Akwa Ibom with 1.61 per cent and Cross River with 1.30 per cent.
The male ranking for the zone placed Rivers at 2.85 per cent, Edo at 2.06 per cent, Delta at 1.79 per cent, Akwa Ibom at 1.48 per cent and Cross River at 1.21 per cent.
Among female candidates, Rivers recorded 3.19 per cent, followed by Edo at 2.28 per cent, Akwa Ibom at 1.73 per cent, Cross River at 1.37 per cent and Delta at 1.29 per cent.
Wushishi explained that the comprehensive rankings were contained in the statistical tables released alongside the 2026 SSCE Internal results.
The tables provide detailed information on candidates' performance across the geopolitical zones, individual states and gender categories.
