Atiku: Our Visit to Buhari Was Not About Coalition Talks

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clarified that his recent visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kaduna was purely for Sallah celebrations and not related to any political coalition plans.

Atiku led a high-profile delegation of politicians—including former governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto)—to Buhari’s residence on Friday. The visit drew public interest amid ongoing speculations about opposition parties forming a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing journalists, Atiku emphasized that the visit had no political agenda.

“We came here on a courtesy and Sallah greetings visit to President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said, noting that he had missed earlier visits due to obligations in Adamawa, where he represented the Lamido Fombina, HRH Dr. Muhammadu Musdafa, during the Sallah celebrations.

When asked directly about talks of an opposition coalition, Atiku admitted that such discussions are ongoing but insisted they were not the purpose of this visit. “There is a plan for the major political parties to come together and form a strong opposition, but it is not part of this visit,” he clarified.

Atiku also shared details of the visit on his verified social media accounts, describing it as a “wonderful time” with Buhari and highlighting the former president’s characteristic humour.

Other politicians present included former governors Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), and Achike Udenwa (Imo), among others.

The visit, which came shortly after APC governors led by Senator Hope Uzodimma also visited Buhari, has stirred conversations across social media, with Nigerians debating its possible political implications.
