Lagos State Government Reaffirms Commitment to Speed Limit Enforcement

Amid ongoing public discussions surrounding the enforcement of speed limits on select roads, the Lagos State government has reaffirmed the legality and necessity of these regulations, urging all motorists to comply for the safety and well-being of all road users.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, cited Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018) as the legal foundation for imposing penalties on motorists who exceed prescribed speed limits.

Addressing concerns about traffic signs, Osiyemi clarified that the Ministry of Transportation is solely responsible for determining the size, color, and type of traffic signs in Lagos, ensuring these signs meet international standards and best practices.

The commissioner also urged the public to refrain from spreading false information regarding the speed limit enforcement, stressing that speed limit cameras were installed based on comprehensive studies and are currently operational only on Alapere Road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way. Further studies have identified other areas where cameras may be installed, and these will be considered after additional reviews.

Reaffirming that the primary purpose of the cameras is to enhance road safety, Osiyemi called on all motorists and members of the public to visit the official Lagos State Ministry of Transportation website, verify official social media channels, or contact the relevant traffic management authorities for further clarification.
