National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has dismissed speculation that he plans to rejoin the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that the PDP is effectively “dead” and that the APC is preparing for a sweeping victory in the 2027 general elections.
Ganduje’s comments came in response to a statement by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who claimed that the APC would soon collapse, prompting former PDP members—including Ganduje—to return to the opposition party.
Speaking on Sunday, Lamido had said, “I’m confident that all those who left the PDP will return, including Ganduje, because very soon, the APC will burst and split into factions, having accommodated people with different mindsets. Within six months, all those who defected to the APC will come back, and the PDP will rise with full force to wrest power in 2027.”
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja by his Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje described Lamido’s assertions as baseless and irrational. He said it was, in fact, Lamido who would soon join the APC, noting that he had no intention of abandoning the ruling party for what he called a "failing opposition."
According to the statement, Ganduje predicted the PDP would go into extinction by the end of 2025 due to internal crises and growing irrelevance. He pointed to the increasing number of defections to the APC as evidence of the ruling party’s national dominance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.
“It is evident to any discerning observer that under President Tinubu’s leadership, the APC continues to gain momentum, with prominent political figures defecting to the party in large numbers. With such overwhelming national support, the APC remains focused on consolidating its achievements and preparing for a resounding victory in the 2027 general elections,” the statement read.
Ganduje went further to say, “In fact, we will soon receive Sule Lamido because very soon, he won’t have anywhere else to go—the PDP is dead.”
He reaffirmed his pride in leading the APC and committed to deepening internal democracy and promoting good governance within the party. Ganduje urged Lamido to focus on resolving the PDP’s internal divisions rather than spreading what he described as baseless propaganda.
