Over 250,000 Ondo Residents Benefit from Health Insurance Scheme – Gov. Aiyedatiwa

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has revealed that over 250,000 residents have so far benefited from the state’s health insurance scheme since it was launched.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria as the Non-State Actor (NSA) for the IMPACT Malaria Project in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa—represented by his Special Adviser on Health Matters, Prof. Simidele Odimayo—said the initiative has extended free healthcare services to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, widows, orphans, people living with disabilities, and individuals with sickle cell disorder.

Providing a breakdown, Odimayo stated that 8,754 elderly persons, 7,012 widows, 2,712 disabled individuals, 1,500 orphans, and 3,040 sickle cell patients currently access free treatment under the scheme.

He noted that the state's health sector is undergoing comprehensive reforms. These include the introduction of the first-ever Essential Medicine List and the revitalisation of all primary health care facilities across the state. Upgrades include borehole water supply, solar-powered electricity for 24-hour service, and accommodations for health workers to ensure consistent care delivery.

The governor also highlighted the ongoing Hepatitis B Elimination Programme, and measures being taken to ensure the availability of essential and affordable drugs through the State Contributory Health Commission.

Aiyedatiwa emphasized that his administration has made significant progress in the health sector, leading to improved well-being for citizens. He added that regular recruitment of health workers and prompt salary payments, on par with federal counterparts, have strengthened the sector.

He further stated that the restructuring of the state’s tertiary hospital had paved the way for the establishment of a federal teaching hospital.

Also speaking, the Project Coordinator of the IMPACT Malaria Project, Dr. Waheed Afolayan, said the selection and engagement of the NSA were carried out in line with the National Malaria Elimination Programme and World Bank’s implementation policies.
