The Lagos State Police Command has debunked rumours surrounding a viral video showing a group of young men reportedly arriving in Ibeju-Lekki under suspicious circumstances. The Command confirmed that the 89 individuals seen in the video are legitimate workers recruited from Katsina State for employment at the Dangote Refinery in Lekki.
In a statement posted on X by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command said it received the report on May 14, 2025, and promptly deployed officers to investigate the situation.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the young men, 89 in total, had arrived from Katsina State as part of a labour force contracted to work at the Dangote Refinery,” the statement read.
The contractor responsible for the recruitment, along with the refinery’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), confirmed to police that the men were brought in through a legitimate arrangement and had been cleared to live and work within the facility.
“The contractor appeared before the police and confirmed he had personally sourced the labourers for legitimate employment,” the statement added.
The police also confirmed that thorough checks were conducted on the individuals. “They were all searched, and no incriminating items were found in their possession,” Hundeyin said. “Each of them presented a valid National Identification Number (NIN), which was verified.”
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified or alarmist information. He reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and public safety across Lagos State.
The police advised residents to always verify information before sharing, emphasising the danger of spreading false or misleading content.
