Shun Distractions, Embrace Greatness, PDP Chieftain Charges Nigerian Children

Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State and a 2023 governorship aspirant, has called on Nigerian children to remain focused, avoid distractions, and tap into the immense potential within and around them to achieve greatness.

Sowunmi made the appeal in a statement released on Tuesday to commemorate this year’s Children’s Day.

Addressing children across Nigeria and the African continent, he urged them to rise above various developmental challenges and work toward building a better future for themselves and the black race.

“I see early signs that the future will be bright! Children of Nigeria, the African race looks to you to tell our amazing story—of struggle, determination, and triumph,” he said. “Focus is key in the midst of loud distractions targeting your young minds. You must apply yourselves to things that edify.”

He encouraged children to cherish and uphold Africa’s rich culture and traditions, noting that while these are rooted in heritage, they must also evolve to support personal and communal growth.

“Do not see culture and tradition as static. Open your minds to gradual improvements that support your survival and progress,” Sowunmi advised. “Adopt the mindset: ‘I am because you are.’ Be your brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.”

He concluded with a message of hope and encouragement, saying, “May the owner of life be with you as you strive. I see signs of a glorious future. Have fun on this one day dedicated to you—our future.
