Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged Nigerian youths to seize the vast opportunities in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to become self-reliant and future-ready.
The governor made this call on Thursday while unveiling the Window on America centre — an ICT project launched by the American Consulate in partnership with GFA Technologies — at the Ogun State Tech Hub, Kobape Road, Abeokuta.
Describing the new American Window as a result of a visionary public-private partnership, Abiodun noted that the initiative involved the Ogun State Government, through the Bureau of Information Technology, GFA Technologies, and the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
He explained that Window on America is designed to bridge the gap between the aspirations of young people and global opportunities. He stressed that Ogun State recognises the transformative role of digital innovation in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and improving lives.
“This understanding has led us to invest significantly in digital infrastructure — from fibre optic connectivity to digital literacy initiatives and innovation clusters across the state,” Abiodun said.
According to him, the centre is more than just a space; it is a hub for knowledge exchange, skill development, and peer collaboration with young innovators worldwide. “This is where global ideas meet local ambitions,” he added, highlighting the government’s commitment to collaboration and a shared vision for innovation.
Governor Abiodun revealed that the centre will offer free programming, an English conversation club, digital literacy workshops, discussions on global issues, and access to American-authored books, journalism, and other resources. “These are not just amenities; they are essential tools for the workforce of the future,” he said.
The Acting Consular General of the United States, JoEllen Gorg, described Window on America as a symbol of what strong, innovative leadership can achieve. She noted that the centre is part of a growing network of 29 American Spaces across Nigeria and the second in Ogun State.
She said the facility aims to develop the skills of young Nigerians in entrepreneurship, leadership, technology, and cultural exchange. Equipped with modern computers, high-speed internet, and access to thousands of books and academic resources, the centre will support students, entrepreneurs, teachers, and creatives alike. Gorg assured that the U.S. would continue to back such initiatives.
Debo Omololu, representing GFA Technologies, said the company has invested ₦400 million in Ogun State and currently employs over 1,000 people in software engineering at the hub. He encouraged young people to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.
Earlier, the Acting Consular General paid a courtesy visit to Governor Abiodun at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
