Manchester United are set to fast-track the appointment of a new interim head coach as the club closes in on a final decision between Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a series of face-to-face meetings with senior club officials.
According to DIP Connect Online News, both former United players held talks with the club’s hierarchy on Monday, where they each outlined their plans, with further in-depth discussions expected to continue the same day.
Sources indicate that Carrick made a strong impression during his meetings, although there is still considerable appreciation within the club for the popularity and support Solskjaer enjoyed during his previous spell in charge.
Manchester United are keen to name an interim manager as quickly as possible so the new appointee can begin preparations ahead of Saturday’s crucial Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
The urgency follows Darren Fletcher’s confirmation that his agreed short-term period in charge of the first team has come to an end. After the club’s 2-1 FA Cup loss to Brighton, Fletcher revealed he would return to the Carrington Training Centre on Monday to discuss his future role within the club.
The defeat to Brighton has further deepened United’s struggles this season, leaving them eliminated from both domestic cup competitions. Consequently, the Premier League now remains their only focus for the rest of the campaign.
