Tinubu Celebrates Bisi Akande at 87, Hails Him as Mentor and Champion of Democracy

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Osun State Governor and first National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande, as he clocks 87 on Friday.

In a personal statement issued on Friday, the President described Akande as an elder statesman whose contributions to Nigeria’s growth, democratic development and political evolution remain profound and enduring.

“Baba Akande has contributed a lot to the growth and development of this country and to the emergence and institutionalisation of democracy in the land,” Tinubu stated.

The President traced Akande’s political journey, noting that he was deeply influenced by the political philosophy and vision of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He recalled that Akande began his professional career as an accountant with British Petroleum before taking a leave of absence to venture into public service, a path he would follow for life.

According to Tinubu, Akande distinguished himself at every stage of public service. He served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, later became Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and went on to serve as Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.

The President further noted that as Interim National Chairman of the APC, Akande laid the foundation for a political structure that achieved a historic milestone by defeating an incumbent government at the federal level in the 2015 general election.

“We must thank Baba for his leadership, industry, hard work, wisdom and labour of love for our party and country. We must thank him for his contributions to his state, the nation and the progressive movement,” Tinubu said.

Describing Akande as a mentor and leader of integrity, honesty and uprightness, the President acknowledged the former governor’s consistent commitment to values that strengthen the nation.

“I must again express my gratitude to Baba Akande for his inspiration, advice and encouragement, which greatly helped me in my political career and my journey to the presidency. His support for our administration and the continued implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda is also worthy of note,” he added.

Tinubu noted that even at 87, Akande remains a strong advocate and defender of democracy, social justice and good governance, showing no signs of slowing down.

The President prayed for continued good health and renewed strength for the elder statesman.
