2Baba Slams Fela–Wizkid Comparison, Calls It Disrespectful to Afrobeat Legacy

Veteran Nigerian musician Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has criticised the ongoing comparisons between Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and contemporary music star Wizkid, describing such debates as “ridiculous and disrespectful.”

Speaking during a recent episode of the Mic On podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, 2Baba addressed the controversy that has sparked widespread reactions across the Nigerian music scene. The debate has drawn responses from members of Fela’s family, including Seun Kuti, Yeni Kuti and Femi Kuti, as well as Wizkid’s fans and other stakeholders in the industry.

While acknowledging Wizkid’s success and global influence, 2Baba stressed that it is unfair to compare the singer with Fela, whose impact on Nigerian music and the global Afrobeat movement remains unmatched.

According to him, such comparisons do a disservice to both artistes, noting that Fela’s legacy stands in a class of its own.

“It is ridiculous and disrespectful to compare Fela with Wizkid. Also, it is unfair to Wizkid to compare him with Fela,” 2Baba said.

The music icon also used the podcast appearance to touch on personal issues, including challenges in his marriage to Natasha and a recent viral video incident in London that resulted in his temporary arrest.
