The Oyo State Government has reiterated its readiness for the official take-off of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), in line with the Federal Government’s plan for a gradual shift from pen-and-paper examinations to full digital testing.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade. According to the release, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, made this known during a courtesy visit by the WAEC Zonal Coordinator and Deputy Registrar, Mr. Waheed Amode, alongside his management team.
Olayiwola revealed that Governor Seyi Makinde has directed that the cost implications for procuring over 60,000 laptops for public senior secondary schools across the state be worked out. He said the move is aimed at positioning Oyo State ahead of the full adoption of CBT examinations.
The commissioner also commended WAEC for steps taken to address challenges encountered during the 2025 examinations and pledged the ministry’s continued support in curbing examination malpractice and preventing the vandalisation of school facilities.
In his remarks, Amode said the visit was to appreciate the Oyo State Ministry of Education for its support during the 2025 WAEC examinations and its sustained collaboration with the council over the years, describing the ministry as a critical stakeholder in WAEC’s success.
He disclosed that registration for the 2026 May/June WAEC examination closed on February 2, 2026, adding that the upcoming examinations would be conducted using both CBT and pen-and-paper modes, depending on each school’s level of readiness. He noted that schools willing to participate fully in CBT are required to formally indicate their interest through official correspondence.
Amode also warned that strict sanctions await candidates found with mobile phones in examination halls, stressing that such offences could lead to the cancellation of an entire school’s results, depending on the circumstances. He urged principals and teachers to uphold integrity to strengthen educational standards.
