Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has explained why he attended the “Occupy the National Assembly” protest alongside his son, saying the decision was both precautionary and symbolic.
Amaechi, who spoke on Tuesday at the protest venue, said his son a medical doctor accompanied him in the event that the demonstration turned violent and medical attention became necessary.
According to the former Rivers State governor, bringing his son was also meant to underscore his belief that leaders should stand openly with the people, including their families, during moments of national agitation.
He called on Nigerians to rise against the Senate’s stance on the electronic transmission of election results, insisting that all opposition parties must actively participate in the protest.
Amaechi accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of resisting electronic transmission because of fear of electoral defeat.
“I believe opposition parties should come out PDP, ADC, everybody should be on the streets to protest the actions of one party.
“If we come out and they claim the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they control 31 states. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician knows he has done well is through the people,” Amaechi said.
