Shehu Sani Backs Remi Tinubu’s Praise of US Airstrikes Against Terrorists in Sokoto

Senator Shehu Sani has expressed support for First Lady Oluremi Tinubu following her endorsement of the United States’ airstrikes targeting terrorist groups in Sokoto State, describing her stance as justified given the severity of insecurity in the region.

Sani, who previously represented Kaduna Central in the Senate, questioned critics of the First Lady’s comments, noting that the US-led air operation in December 2025 was a positive development in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

Reacting on his X handle on Tuesday, Sani called for sustained aerial operations, especially by Nigeria’s Air Force, against armed groups operating across the North. “The December air strikes against bandits and terrorists in the North was a welcome development. More strikes by our Air Force are needed against those mass murderers, rapists, and kidnappers,” Sani wrote.

He further defended Mrs. Tinubu’s position, saying her remarks reflected the harsh realities faced by communities affected by terrorist attacks: “What Senator Remi said is right. I don’t know why some people are attacking her in view of the heinous atrocities of those terrorists,” he added.

The US forces, in coordination with the Nigerian government, conducted airstrikes on suspected Islamic State (IS) fighters near the Niger Republic border in Sokoto State on December 25, 2025. US President Donald Trump described the operation as a “Christmas present,” claiming it dealt a significant blow to IS elements responsible for attacks on civilians. While US Africa Command confirmed that several militants were neutralized, other reports suggested that some strikes hit abandoned areas.

During a recent visit to Washington, DC, Mrs. Tinubu praised the intervention, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in areas such as intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism. In an interview with Fox News, she described the operation as a “blessing” and called for expanded cooperation: “The intervention of the U.S. was quite a welcome development. Nigeria looks forward to greater collaboration with the United States on security issues, and we expect there will be more.”
