Maverick singer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has launched a scathing critique of Nigerian Christian clerics, alleging that the vast majority are more focused on profit-making than standing up for truth and justice.
Speaking on a recent episode of the KAA Truths podcast, the self-styled Area Fada condemned what he described as the silence of many pastors amid Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges.
According to him, many clerics have allegedly chosen to align with corrupt politicians rather than speak out against poor governance, thereby exploiting the masses who look up to them for moral guidance.
Charly Boy insisted that he does not subscribe to the mindset or belief system he associates with most Nigerians, stressing that he remains unmoved by what he termed the sanctimonious behaviour of some pastors. “All the pastors I know of in Nigeria, 99 per cent of them are useless. It is just a business that they are running,” he said.
He further added, “I may live in Nigeria but Nigeria does not live in me. I don’t believe like you. I don’t want to think like you people. I’m not in the same class with you people. I come from a different space and time.”
The comments have since sparked debates across social media, with many Nigerians divided over his blunt assessment of religious leadership in the country.
