Fix UTME Registration Bottlenecks Now, Obi Urges JAMB

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to urgently resolve challenges affecting candidates registering for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, warning that students must not suffer because of administrative lapses.

Obi raised the concern after witnessing large crowds and confusion at JAMB’s office in Amawbia, Anambra State, adding that similar complaints have been reported in other parts of the country. He noted that the situation appears linked to the proscription of several computer-based test centres over alleged infractions.

While acknowledging that authorities may have valid reasons to sanction centres that violate rules, he urged the examination body to adopt a more balanced and humane approach. He suggested that centres under investigation could be allowed to provide limited services under strict monitoring to prevent further breaches.

He also recommended that if approving new centres would take time, JAMB could temporarily deploy previously approved facilities under close supervision to ease pressure on state offices.

“With the registration deadline approaching, many candidates some travelling long distances and even spending nights away from home risk missing the examination through no fault of their own,” Obi said.

He stressed that students should not bear the consequences of systemic shortcomings, calling for swift and compassionate intervention to ensure no young person’s academic future is jeopardised by avoidable administrative bottlenecks.
