Kaduna Kidnap Victims: 82 Abducted Worshippers Freed — Gov Sani

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has confirmed the release of 82 Christian worshippers abducted by bandits during a church service in Kurmin Wali village, Kajuru Local Government Area, on January 18, 2026.

The governor disclosed this during a visit to the rescued victims at the Kaduna State Women and Children Shelter, where they are currently receiving medical care and psychosocial support.

Recall that bandits had attacked the community during a worship service and abducted 177 congregants. Eleven victims were earlier released, leaving 166 in captivity before the latest rescue.

During the visit, Governor Sani expressed sympathy to the victims over their ordeal and reassured residents of Kurmin Wali that sustained efforts were ongoing to secure the release of those still held by the abductors. He expressed optimism that the remaining captives would regain their freedom within the next few days.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to ending banditry and kidnapping across Kaduna State, stressing that no effort would be spared until all captives are safely rescued and reunited with their families.

He also commended security agencies for their gallantry, swift response and dedication in combating criminal elements, while urging residents to continue cooperating with authorities to restore lasting peace in affected communities.

Speaking on the visit, Governor Sani said it was with “a heavy yet hopeful heart” that he met the survivors, describing the encounter as a reminder of the cost of insecurity and a testament to the resilience of the people.

He noted that the victims were responding positively to treatment and expressed confidence that they would soon be medically and psychologically fit to reunite with their families.

Governor Sani further revealed that his administration had made a strong case to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff for the establishment of a military base in Kurmin Wali to enhance security in the area and surrounding communities.

“This critical step will significantly strengthen security and reaffirm our commitment to protecting lives, restoring peace and upholding the dignity of every citizen of Kaduna State,” he said.
