Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has described his debut for Atletico Madrid as a “dream start” after delivering an impressive performance in the club’s emphatic 5–0 victory over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.
The 28-year-old, who recently sealed a high-profile transfer from Atalanta, wasted no time in making his mark in Spanish football. Handed a starting role just days after joining the club, Lookman scored a fine goal in the 37th minute and also set up Antoine Griezmann as Diego Simeone’s side powered into the semi-finals.
Speaking to Sporty TV after the match, the Nigerian international expressed happiness with his performance and appreciation for the warm reception he has received since arriving at the club.
“Yeah, very, very happy. It’s been great coming here and being welcomed by the team, the staff, everybody. Everyone’s been great with me, so yeah, dream start,” he said.
Lookman was a constant attacking threat throughout the encounter at the Estadio La Cartuja, playing a key role in Atletico’s offensive display and repeatedly unsettling the Real Betis defence.
Reflecting on his goal and assist, he credited his display to persistence, intelligent movement and consistency.
“I just tried to make the runs, be dangerous in the right moments. It’s about repetition—keep doing it, keep making the movements and trying to be dangerous,” he explained.
He also spoke about his motivation at the club, noting that the joy of representing Atletico Madrid fuels his desire to work hard and remain consistent.
“I’m very, very happy to be here at such a special club. That feeling makes me want to work hard, perform, stay dedicated and try to be consistent every single day. That’s the most important thing,” Lookman added.
In a post shared on X on Friday, Lookman wrote: “Proud to wear this badge for the first time, happy to get my first goal and even happier with the win. Aupa Atleti!!”
