The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has released its January 2026 Operational Performance Factsheet, outlining the performance of grid-connected power plants nationwide.
According to the report, Nigeria’s power plants recorded a Plant Availability Factor (PAF) of 36 per cent during the month. This means an average of 4,901 megawatts (MW) was available for dispatch out of the country’s total installed capacity of 13,625 MW.
The factsheet also revealed a strong Average Load Factor of 90 per cent, indicating that about 4,421 megawatt-hours per hour (MWh/h) of the available generation capacity was effectively utilised on the national grid.
NERC identified Ihovbor Power Plant (Unit 2), Kainji Power Plant (Unit 1) and Jebba Power Plant (Unit 1) as the leading energy producers for the period, citing their high availability and efficient utilisation rates.
The commission noted that the operational performance data offers critical insights into the state of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and supports informed decision-making targeted at improving power generation, reliability and sustainability.
NERC encouraged stakeholders and members of the public to remain informed about developments in the sector, stressing that such performance indicators play a vital role in shaping the future of electricity supply in Nigeria.
