Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has debunked a viral social media report claiming that he has withdrawn from active politics and will no longer participate in the 2027 presidential election, describing the claim as false, misleading and politically motivated.
The clarification came following reports circulating online alleging that Atiku had recently informed members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State that he was stepping aside from politics and retiring from public political life.
Reacting through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Paul Ibe, the former Vice President said the report was entirely fabricated and should be disregarded by the public.
According to the statement, Atiku had not held any meeting with ADC stakeholders at the national level as claimed in the viral report. It explained that his only recent interaction was with stakeholders of the party in Adamawa State last Thursday.
The statement further stressed that Atiku would never communicate a decision as weighty as withdrawing from active politics through rumours, faceless sources or third-party speculation. It maintained that if such a decision were ever to be taken, it would be officially announced through the Atiku Media Office.
His media team also described the claim as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at creating confusion, slowing political momentum and misleading Nigerians ahead of the 2027 political season.
It added that the report bore the clear signs of a deliberate attempt by anti-democratic forces unsettled by what it described as the growing national resolve to rescue Nigeria from the failures of the current administration.
The statement also suggested that only those threatened by the political direction of events in the country could be behind what it called a desperate narrative intended to distract supporters and distort the truth.
Atiku’s media office therefore urged his supporters, members of the ADC and well-meaning Nigerians to ignore the false report and remain focused on the broader national effort to rebuild and reposition the country.
The former Vice President, who has already indicated interest in contesting the presidency in 2027, reaffirmed through the statement that he remains fully engaged in Nigeria’s political future.
