Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has sparked debate with his comments on the ‘Japa’ movement, asserting that the desire to migrate abroad is largely driven by poverty. Speaking during a recent livestream, Kuti argued that many Nigerians who aspire to leave the country do so because of economic hardship.
He extended his critique to Wizkid’s fan base, known as FC, describing some followers as “poor and mentally challenged” and suggesting that their upbringing in underprivileged homes shapes their mindset and ambitions.
“Most of these FC are poor. They are children that grew up in poor homes. I cannot blame them because if you grew up in a poor home in Nigeria, your brain cannot be fully formed.
The biggest example of people who grew up in poor homes are the people that believe in Japa. If you believe in Japa, it’s because you grew up in a poor home. There’s nobody who grew up in a better house who will Japa. You can travel and come back,” Kuti stated.
