The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued a public safety advisory urging residents to keep a safe distance from live electrical wires and avoid touching anyone who is in contact with electricity, warning that careless rescue attempts can lead to more injuries or deaths.
In a statement shared Monday via its official X account, the commission stressed that electricity is highly dangerous and must be handled only by trained professionals. It cautioned that instinctively trying to help a shocked victim with bare hands or pulling them away could cause the current to pass through the rescuer as well.
The commission highlighted key precautions:
Hands off: Never touch a live wire or a victim directly.
Stand back: Keep a safe distance and ensure others do the same.
Call professionals: Immediately alert the nearest electricity distribution company or emergency responders.
NERC emphasized that responsible action during electrical emergencies can save lives and prevent additional accidents. The advisory forms part of its ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at reducing incidents linked to fallen power lines and other electrical hazards, urging residents to share the message to safeguard their families and communities.
