Why I Joined APC — Kano Governor Explains Defection

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has explained that his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was informed by the need to strategically align Kano State with the centre of national governance in order to fast-track development.

Governor Yusuf made this known while addressing a massive crowd at the 2026 Grand Rally held at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Monday.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa.

According to Yusuf, Kano is too large and strategically significant to remain politically disconnected from the Federal Government.

“It is about placing Kano in a position where it can fully participate in national development and secure a better future for its citizens,” the governor said.

He stressed that his decision was not driven by personal ambition but by a sense of responsibility to the people of the state.

The governor further noted that Kano must actively key into the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, adding that the ongoing reforms of the Federal Government require serious governance and diligent implementation to yield positive results nationwide.

“With the support of our great party and the cooperation of the Federal Government, Kano State is better positioned to move forward with confidence and stability,” Yusuf added.

He also expressed appreciation to Vice President Kashim Shettima and the governors of Jigawa, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe and Plateau states for honouring the rally and supporting his administration.

Yusuf commended the former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano State APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, as well as members of the National and State Assemblies for their solidarity, noting that their presence reflected unity, strength and a shared resolve to ensure political stability and sustainable development in Kano.

Speaking at the event, the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, called on all party stakeholders to rally behind the governor, describing the turnout as impressive.

“The turnout today demonstrates that Kano APC members are united, enthusiastic and committed to advancing the party’s agenda and supporting President Tinubu’s vision,” he said.

In separate remarks, Ganduje, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, ALGON Chairperson Sa’adatu Yushau Soja, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, and several lawmakers pledged total loyalty to the governor and the APC.

“We pledge 100 per cent loyalty and cooperation to the governor and the APC in Kano,” they assured.

The rally, which attracted thousands of party members and supporters, marked what many political observers have described as a new chapter in Kano politics, signalling a decisive move to integrate the state more effectively into national governance and accelerate development.

Governor Yusuf emphasised that the success of his administration and the progress of Kano State depend on cohesive leadership, strategic alignment with the Federal Government and the active participation of political leaders across party lines.

The event ended with a renewed commitment by Kano APC members to work collectively to advance the party’s agenda and ensure that the state benefits maximally from federal programmes and investments.

Recall that in January, Yusuf formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) following his visit to President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja. He attributed his defection to what he described as “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” within the party.

In recent months, several governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have also defected to the APC. They include Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori, Peter Mbah, Douye Diri, Agbu Kefas, Siminalayi Fubara and Caleb Mutfwang.
