Nigeria’s women’s basketball stalwart, Sarah Ogoke, has announced her retirement from the senior national team, bringing to a close an illustrious 15‑year career representing the 🇳🇬 D’Tigress on the international stage.
In an emotional statement released on social media and through the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Ogoke thanked her family, teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support throughout her career. She described the decision to retire from national duty as one of the hardest of her life.
Ogoke’s journey with the national team began in her teens, and she has since become one of Nigeria’s most decorated players. She played key roles in multiple AfroBasket tournaments, World Cups, and the historic qualification for the Olympic Games achievements that elevated the profile of Nigerian women’s basketball globally.
“I am forever grateful for the privilege of wearing the green and white,” Ogoke said. “Representing Nigeria has been the greatest honour of my life. I leave with pride, knowing I gave everything for this nation.”
The veteran guard also hinted that her basketball journey is not over, adding that she plans to stay involved in the sport through mentoring, coaching, and youth development initiatives.
NBBF President commended Ogoke’s contributions, describing her as “a true ambassador of Nigerian basketball whose spirit and dedication inspired a generation.”
Ogoke’s retirement marks the end of an era for the D’Tigress, as Nigeria continues to build toward future continental and global competitions.
