Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, has addressed the controversy surrounding his exchange with social media influencer Rinu Oduala, insisting that his remark was misinterpreted and unfairly sexualised.
Speaking during an appearance on News Central on Monday, Edafe defended his now-deleted comment, maintaining that it contained no sexual insinuation.
“It is well. Nobody is talking about what Rinu is saying to me and it is very sad. Rinu’s statement is very insulting. My statement was not insulting,” he said.
The police spokesman argued that public criticism overlooked what he described as provocative remarks directed at him by the influencer.
“My statement was only sexualised by Rinu and it is very sad because, like I said, police too are human beings. It was Rinu who sexualised my statement, I never sexualised that statement,” Edafe added.
He, however, acknowledged deleting the comment after it was widely misunderstood, stating, “Because my statement was misinterpreted, I had to take it down.”
The controversy began days earlier after Edafe responded to criticism from Oduala over the police handling of alleged sexual assault cases in Ozoro, Delta State.
While Oduala accused the police of a slow response, Edafe’s reply sparked widespread backlash online, with many Nigerians describing it as inappropriate given the sensitivity of the issue.
