A phone dealer, identified as Olatunbo Praise, has been arrested in Lagos for allegedly blackmailing a female customer using her private photos and videos obtained during a phone upgrade transaction.
The suspect was apprehended after the victim reported that he secretly transferred her personal files to his device while she visited his boss’s shop in Ikeja to swap her iPhone.
According to the suspect, he admitted to the act, stating: “My name is Olatunbo Praise, I work at Ikeja. The reason I was chased out of my workplace is because I blackmailed someone. I was sending a girl’s nude video to blackmail her.”
Explaining how he obtained the materials, he said: “She came to buy a phone from my boss’s shop, so I just airdropped the videos from the phone she wanted to change. I stole her nude videos and pictures and I was using them to blackmail her.”
The victim recounted that she had visited the store about two weeks earlier to swap her iPhone 15 Pro Max for an iPhone 16. She explained that the routine inspection of her phone did not raise any suspicion at the time, but she later declined the dealer’s offer due to dissatisfaction with the price.
She said the situation escalated on Sunday, the 15th, when the suspect sent her private images using an international number in an attempt to extort her.
Rather than panic, the victim said she devised a plan to lure him. “I used another WhatsApp line to contact him, pretending I wanted to buy an iPhone. He agreed to deliver it to my place, where I had already arranged for some people to apprehend him,” she said.
She added that the suspect was subsequently beaten by those present before being handed over to the police.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the matter.
