Ex-Acting Accountant-General Nwabuoku Sentenced to 72 Years Over ₦868.4m Fraud

A former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, has been sentenced to a cumulative 72 years in prison following his conviction for money laundering involving ₦868.46 million.

The judgment was delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja after a prosecution led by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to court findings, Nwabuoku illegally diverted public funds during his tenure as Acting Accountant-General, in a case the court described as a serious breach of public trust.

In its ruling, the court underscored the gravity of the offence, pointing to both the scale of the financial loss and the abuse of office. The sentence, it said, is intended to serve as a strong deterrent to public officials who may be tempted to misappropriate government resources.

The conviction marks one of the more significant anti-corruption rulings in recent times, reinforcing ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to clamp down on financial crimes in public service.
