Terrorists Kill Eight, Bomb Bridge in Niger State, Cut Off Key Border Market Route

At least eight people have been killed after suspected terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday.

The attackers also reportedly blew up a major bridge linking the Luma–Babana–Agwara axis, severing a critical route used by residents traveling to the Babana border market, a key trading hub that operates every Monday, with multiple explosions recorded across the area.

“In the early hours today, bandits stormed Borgu Local Government Area and bombed the Luma–Babana bridge,” a source said.

“The destruction has prevented villagers from crossing into neighboring communities, especially those heading to the Babana Monday Market to trade.”

Additional explosive devices were detonated between Rafingiwa and Babana, as well as between Woro and Kaiama, triggering panic and forcing residents to flee affected communities.

Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area, Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, confirmed the attack, stating that authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage.

“There was actually an attack by bandits and we are trying to verify the magnitude. A bridge was damaged,” he said.

“We have already deployed officials to the area to ascertain the situation.”

The incident underscores growing security concerns in parts of Niger State, where attacks on infrastructure and civilian populations continue to disrupt livelihoods and restrict movement.
