The Federal Government has approved the appointment of former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adejare Bello, as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The appointment was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, who said Bello brings extensive leadership, legislative, and diplomatic experience to the role.
According to the statement, Bello previously served as Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, where he was widely acknowledged for his leadership and commitment to democratic governance.
He also represented Nigeria as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama, contributing to Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements and international cooperation.
An alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Bello holds a law degree from the institution, a background the university said places him in a strong position to understand its heritage and strategic direction.
The university community expressed confidence in Bello’s ability to provide visionary leadership and work collaboratively with the governing council, management, staff, students, and other stakeholders to advance the institution’s academic and developmental goals.
Bello succeeds the late Siyan Oyeweso, the immediate past Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, who passed away in December 2025 at the age of 64.
