Google Expands AI Language Support to Yorùbá and Hausa, Boosting Accessibility for Nigerian Users

Google has officially added Yorùbá and Hausa to its AI-powered Search features, a move aimed at making advanced AI tools more accessible to speakers of Africa’s widely spoken languages.

The update allows users to interact with Google’s AI through text and voice input, receiving AI-generated summaries, overviews, and conversational responses in their native tongues. This functionality is powered by Google’s custom version of the Gemini AI model, now embedded in Search.

With this addition, the total number of African languages supported in Google’s AI Search rises to 13, reflecting a broader initiative to enhance AI inclusivity across the continent. Unlike basic translation tools, Google emphasizes that the AI is designed for deep language understanding, delivering locally relevant and meaningful responses rather than literal translations.

“This development represents a significant step toward bridging the digital language gap in Africa,” Google said, highlighting the importance of enabling users to access information in languages they use daily.

By extending AI capabilities to Yorùbá and Hausa, Google is not only expanding its technological footprint in Nigeria but also empowering millions to interact with AI in ways that are culturally and linguistically familiar.
