Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, expressing confidence that the state is ready to elect its first female governor.
She made the declaration while speaking with journalists at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, where she outlined her political ambition and vision for the state.
Obasanjo noted that recent stabilisation of the naira under the current federal administration is a positive development, linking economic progress to her broader governance outlook. She argued that Ogun’s high literacy rate and history of strong female leadership demonstrate the state’s readiness for inclusive governance at the highest level.
Addressing zoning dynamics, she also highlighted that Ogun West has not produced a governor since the state’s creation in 1976, stressing the need for political dialogue among stakeholders to ensure equitable power rotation.
Her declaration signals the early shaping of political alignments ahead of the 2027 election cycle as aspirants begin consultations and strategic positioning.
