Police Council Meets as Tinubu Moves to Confirm Disu as Substantive IGP

President Bola Tinubu is presiding over a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council at the Presidential Villa, where members are expected to formalise the appointment of Acting Inspector-General Olatunji Disu as the substantive head of the Nigeria Police Force.

The closed-door session is convened to ratify Disu’s nomination following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. Disu, who was elevated last week from Assistant Inspector-General and decorated with the rank of IGP, has about two months to retire from service.

Sources indicate that once endorsed by the Council, the President will forward the appointment to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional provisions.

Those attending the meeting include Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, alongside state governors and other statutory members.

The Council, which also includes the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and all 36 state governors, serves as a strategic advisory organ on policing matters. Established under the Police Act 2020, it advises the President on internal security policy, police administration, budgeting, and senior appointments, while ensuring due process in major institutional decisions.

Monday’s deliberation comes amid ongoing security challenges nationwide, highlighting the importance of stable leadership in the country’s policing architecture. If confirmed, Disu’s appointment is expected to reinforce continuity in reform efforts and strengthen public confidence in the Force.
