Nigeria Expands Tertiary Education as FG Inaugurates New Institutional Leaders

The Federal Government has inaugurated principal officers for newly established federal tertiary institutions and the leadership of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s higher education system.

The inauguration was performed in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education.

The newly inaugurated officers will oversee the takeoff of key institutions including the Federal University of Science and Technology Epe in Lagos State and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic Abuja.

Speaking during the ceremony, Alausa said the appointments reflect the government’s determination to expand access to quality tertiary education, strengthen teacher education, and position Nigerian institutions as centres of research, innovation, and technological advancement.

He explained that the new institutions were strategically created to help address pressing national and global challenges such as food security, climate change, renewable energy, and technological innovation.

The minister also tasked the new leadership of the NCCE with strengthening governance across colleges of education and ensuring high academic standards within Nigeria’s teacher education system.

According to the ministry, the move forms part of broader reforms aimed at improving institutional leadership, strengthening governance frameworks, and enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
