Nigeria Unlocks $552 Million HOPE-EDU Fund to Transform Basic Education Nationwide

In a major stride toward educational reform, the Federal Government of Nigeria has unlocked $552 million in HOPE-EDU funding to accelerate foundational learning, expand access to quality basic education, and strengthen education systems across participating states. The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Education on 3 March 2026.

The initiative, aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s GCFR commitment to position education as a pillar of national development, is designed to support measurable, accountable reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). It is co-financed by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, reinforcing system-wide governance, transparency, and results-driven outcomes.

Speaking on the funding milestone, Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, described it as “the fastest activation of education financing of this scale in Nigeria’s history,” emphasizing the combination of vision, intergovernmental coordination, and accountability that made the achievement possible.

“These resources will directly strengthen foundational learning, expand access, and reinforce system-wide accountability across participating states,” Minister Alausa stated. “Under the leadership of President Tinubu, we are proving that reform can be decisive, measurable, and impactful for Nigerian children.”

Since 2022, federal allocations to education have surged by over 302 percent, with the 2026 budget providing ₦3.520 trillion the highest allocation in history complemented by increased state-level funding to address local priorities and targeted interventions.

The HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All (HOPE-EDU) programme is part of a broader HOPE reform framework, which includes HOPE-Governance and HOPE-Primary Health Care. Together, these initiatives aim to tackle systemic challenges in policy development, public financial management, governance, and service delivery, promoting efficiency, transparency, and improved performance in Nigeria’s key social sectors.

The Ministry affirmed its commitment to ensuring that these investments translate into tangible improvements in learning outcomes, teacher effectiveness, equitable access, and system accountability, driving Nigeria toward a knowledge-driven economy and securing a stronger future for every child.
