Nigerian Man Sentenced to Nine Years in Ireland for Violent Student Burglary

A 22-year-old Nigerian, Martin Ekhosuehi, has been sentenced to nine years in prison in Ireland for a violent burglary at a student residence, during which he threatened to cut off the fingers of the occupants.

The sentence was handed down on March 5, 2026, by Judge Sinead Behan in a Cork court. Ekhosuehi had originally been sentenced to 11 years, with two years suspended, resulting in a final custodial term of nine years.

The attack occurred on July 2, 2023, when two masked men broke into a rented student house in Cork city, armed with a large knife and a screwdriver. They demanded money and drugs, physically assaulted the students, and repeatedly threatened to sever their fingers if they did not comply.

Forensic evidence, including a fingerprint on a glove found at the scene and CCTV footage, linked Ekhosuehi to the crime. During the incident, the attackers stole €30 in cash and mobile phones before fleeing. One victim had to escape to a neighbour’s house to raise the alarm, and the ordeal lasted nearly an hour.

Prosecutors highlighted that Ekhosuehi had a lengthy criminal record, including prior convictions for drug and weapons offences, making the attack particularly serious in the eyes of the court.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, underlining the dangers posed by violent break-ins targeting students.
