Nigerian Navy Cracks Down on Oil Theft, Destroys Stolen Crude in Bonny

The Nigerian Navy has destroyed an illegal crude oil storage site containing approximately 17,500 litres of suspected stolen crude oil in the Bonny area of Rivers State, the service announced on Friday.

The operation was conducted under Operation Delta Sentinel, according to Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information. He said the action followed directives from the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, to intensify efforts against crude oil theft and illegal bunkering across Nigeria’s maritime domain.

“FOB Bonny elements moved swiftly to the site and discovered four dugout pits containing a cumulative 17,500 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil. The recovered products were subsequently destroyed in accordance with extant operational guidelines,” Folorunsho stated.

He described the operation as a demonstration of the Navy’s renewed momentum in combating crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.

Capt. Folorunsho added that the Nigerian Navy will continue sustained patrols, enhance surveillance, and strengthen inter-agency collaboration to protect critical national assets and safeguard Nigeria’s economic interests in the maritime environment.
