Real Madrid Condemned by UEFA Following Nazi Salute Incident

Real Madrid has been fined €15,000 by UEFA following an incident in which a fan performed a Nazi salute at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium during their UEFA Champions League playoff match against Benfica.

The gesture, captured on video during the second-leg clash on February 25, prompted UEFA to impose the fine and order a partial closure of 500 seats in the lower south stand for a future UEFA match. The closure is suspended for one year, meaning it will only take effect if a similar incident occurs within that period.

Real Madrid confirmed that the fan responsible was quickly identified by stadium security, evicted, and is facing expulsion proceedings from the club. The team condemned the behavior as promoting hatred and violence, emphasizing that it has no place in football or society.

The incident overshadowed Real Madrid’s 2‑1 victory over Benfica, which secured their progression to the Champions League Round of 16 against Manchester City. UEFA’s disciplinary measures serve as a reminder of the governing body’s strict stance against racism and discriminatory conduct in European football.
