Senate President Akpabio Highlights Surge in Governors’ Revenue Sharing

The Senate President of the National Assembly, Godswill Akpabio, has highlighted the dramatic increase in revenue allocations to Nigeria’s governors, contrasting current distributions with past periods of fiscal hardship.

Speaking on the matter, Akpabio recalled a time when the country recorded zero revenue from oil for over a year, leaving the Consolidated Revenue of the Federation empty due to certain policies. At that time, governors had to manage,

"So that led us to sharing, 300 and something to 400 and something as Governors".

“Today, governors are sharing ₦1.9 trillion, ₦2.7 trillion, and more. What a wonderful time to be a governor,” Akpabio said.

He added that, despite the financial challenges of the past, state leaders had to explore creative ways to survive and still deliver the dividends of democracy to the populace.

The remarks underscore the substantial growth in federal revenue allocation to states, reflecting a fiscal environment that now provides governors with significantly more resources for governance and development projects.
