Tragedy in Lagos: YABATECH Student Shot Dead During Military Operation

A student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Balogun Sultan, has been reportedly shot dead by a soldier during a military operation in the Yaba area of Lagos State. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, near the WAEC bus stop, a busy transit point for students and commuters.

According to eyewitnesses, soldiers were deployed to the area to quell a reported cult clash when gunfire erupted. Sultan, a National Diploma II student enrolled in the college’s distance learning programme, had just completed an examination and remained briefly on campus to submit an assignment. During the operation, he was allegedly struck by stray bullets.

Sultan was rushed to the Military Hospital, Yaba, where doctors performed emergency chest surgery. Despite medical intervention, he was pronounced dead.

Classmates and friends described Sultan as a calm and focused student, mourning his sudden and tragic death. The incident has left many students in shock, highlighting the dangers of civilian areas becoming sites of armed confrontations.

As of now, military authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the shooting or whether the soldier involved has been identified or detained.

This incident has sparked public concern, raising questions about the safety of civilians in areas where military operations intersect with daily urban life.
