The Federal Ministry of Education has congratulated the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, on his emergence as Most Innovative Cabinet Minister of the Year 2025 at the Silver Jubilee Awards organised by Independent Newspapers Limited in Lagos.
Dr. Alausa secured the prestigious recognition following a highly competitive selection process involving cabinet members across sectors. The award process combined nationwide public voting, independent jury assessment, and editorial board review, celebrating outstanding leadership, innovation, and measurable impact in governance.
The honour comes at a defining moment for Nigeria’s education sector, currently undergoing sweeping reforms under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI). The reform agenda is focused on expanding access, improving quality, promoting equity, and aligning education more closely with national development priorities.
A key highlight of the Ministry’s achievements is the revitalisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which is equipping students with practical, job-ready skills and promoting entrepreneurship. This renewed focus is repositioning skills acquisition as a viable pathway to economic growth and productivity.
In addition, the Ministry has intensified investments in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM) education. Through targeted programmes such as the Medical Schools Rehabilitation Programme and the Engineering and Technology Faculties Rehabilitation Programme in Federal Universities of Technology across the six geopolitical zones, several institutions have benefited from upgraded laboratories, hostels, and learning facilities. These interventions are expected to strengthen professional training and help curb brain drain.
Other transformative initiatives include the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), designed to support and scale student-led innovations, and Diaspora Bridge, which fosters collaboration between Nigerian professionals abroad and local universities. Together, these programmes are expanding research capacity and innovation across tertiary institutions.
Efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children have also been intensified through inclusive and coordinated national strategies, particularly targeting underserved communities. Similarly, girls’ education remains a priority, with ongoing programmes providing scholarships, mentorship, and safer learning environments to improve retention and completion rates.
Digital transformation is another cornerstone of the reform drive. The introduction of the Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI) is enhancing real-time tracking of students, teachers, and facilities, thereby improving planning, transparency, and accountability. The expansion of e-learning platforms is also increasing access to quality education beyond traditional classrooms.
Teachers continue to play a central role in these reforms, with increased investment in their training, welfare, and access to modern teaching tools. Infrastructure upgrades across schools nationwide are further improving the overall learning environment.
These gains have been driven by strong collaboration with state governments, agencies, development partners, international organisations, and the private sector, helping to mobilise resources and scale impact across the country.
Reacting to the award, Dr. Alausa expressed appreciation to Nigerians and the organisers, describing the recognition as a reflection of collective efforts to reposition the education sector.
“I sincerely thank Nigerians, the organisers, and the judges for this honour. While we appreciate this recognition, it also reminds us that there is still much work to be done. We remain committed to driving meaningful and lasting reforms that will secure a better future for every Nigerian child,” he said.
The Ministry reaffirmed that the recognition serves as renewed motivation to accelerate reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, with a continued focus on building a resilient, skills-driven, and future-ready education system that supports national development.
