Tragedy at Medical Outreach: U.S.-Based Nigerian Doctor Dies During Abia Health Mission

A U.S.-based Nigerian physician, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, has died in Abia State after suffering a sudden medical emergency while participating in a free medical outreach programme.

The incident occurred during a five-day health mission held from April 13 to April 17, 2026, organised by the Abia State Government in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA).

Dr. Nwaubani, a member of ANPA, had travelled to Nigeria alongside her husband and daughter who is a final-year medical student in the United States to provide free medical services to residents.

According to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, the doctor developed a sudden health complication during the outreach and was immediately rushed to a hospital for urgent care. A joint team of ANPA professionals and local medical experts reportedly worked intensively to stabilise her condition.

“Despite the gallant efforts of the highly skilled medical team to resuscitate her, she could not make it,” the governor said.

Governor Otti expressed deep shock and sadness over her passing, describing Dr. Nwaubani as a committed and compassionate professional who dedicated her time to improving the lives of others. He extended condolences to her family, colleagues, and loved ones, adding that the state government is in contact with them and will provide necessary support.

He also commended the resilience of Dr. Nwaubani’s family and ANPA for allowing the outreach programme to continue despite the tragic loss.

Her death has cast a shadow over the medical mission, even as her contributions continue to be recognised as a testament to service and humanitarian commitment.
