“Nigeria’s Future Hinges on Unity, Not Miracles,” Warns Obasanjo

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stark call for national unity, cautioning that the country’s long-term development will remain elusive unless citizens collectively take responsibility for its future.

Speaking at the 6th Annual Colloquium marking the 65th birthday of Itua Ighodalo, Obasanjo stressed that meaningful progress cannot be outsourced, nor achieved through wishful thinking. The event, themed “The Future of Nigeria,” convened policymakers, thought leaders, and stakeholders to deliberate on the nation’s trajectory.

Represented by Professor Adedeji Daramola of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute, the former president underscored that nation-building is a shared obligation requiring active participation from every segment of society.

“Until we come together to work and fix Nigeria, nobody will fix it for us,” he declared, urging Nigerians from grassroots traders to political elites to embrace accountability and play a proactive role in shaping the country’s destiny.

Obasanjo further highlighted the strategic importance of youth inclusion, describing Nigeria’s demographic profile as a powerful asset. He called for deliberate investment in young people through innovation, education, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, positioning them as central to unlocking sustainable economic growth.
