NIS Cracks Down on Alleged Border Extortion, Suspends Top Officers for Probe

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a sweeping investigation into allegations of widespread extortion by its personnel along the Lagos–Seme border corridor, signaling a firm stance against misconduct within its ranks.

In a decisive move, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, ordered the immediate suspension of comptrollers in charge of the affected commands to ensure an unhindered and transparent probe.

The directive was announced in a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, who stressed that the actions captured in the viral reports are “unacceptable” and a clear breach of the Service’s core values and operational standards.

According to the statement, the NIS leadership has mandated a comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying all officers involved. It added that strict disciplinary measures will be swiftly applied to any personnel found culpable.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the Service assured Nigerians of its resolve to maintain integrity and efficiency across all entry and exit points. It emphasized that any act capable of eroding public trust or damaging its reputation will not be tolerated.

To strengthen accountability, the NIS urged members of the public to report cases of misconduct through its 24-hour contact centre and official social media platforms, noting that internal monitoring mechanisms are being reinforced.
