A Nigerian doctor based in Canada, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised singer Portable to undergo a medical brain examination following his celebrity boxing bout with skit maker Carter Efe.
The highly publicised fight, held over the weekend in Lagos, ended with Portable on the losing side, sparking widespread reactions across social media.
In a viral post and video shared on Monday, Onwumelu, also known as Dr Zo, recommended that the singer undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to check for possible internal injuries sustained during the match.
He expressed concern that multiple punches landed by Carter Efe on sensitive areas of Portable’s head could pose serious health risks, including the possibility of a subdural haematoma.
“This is an exhibition match meant for entertainment, not a real fight to harm anyone. The contenders are not expected to fight to that extent,” he said.
“I watched the whole video; the kind of punches he delivered means Portable may never recover from them. Anybody who knows Portable should take him to the hospital for MRI and brain test; there may be an artery that might have been damaged,” he added.
The doctor also called on organisers of such events to prioritise safety by making protective headgear compulsory for participants to minimise the risk of severe head injuries.
