FG Monitors Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa, Plans Repatriation for Affected Nigerians — Ojukwu

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, has confirmed that the Federal Government is closely monitoring developments in South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens.

According to the minister, the protection of Nigerians abroad remains a top priority, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed immediate measures to support affected nationals.

Ojukwu disclosed that arrangements are ongoing for voluntary repatriation flights to assist stranded and irregular Nigerian citizens who wish to return home.

“So far, about 130 applicants have registered with our Mission in South Africa, and this number is expected to increase as engagement continues,” she said.

She also commended the role of Nigerian associations in South Africa, noting that they are working closely with diplomatic missions to ensure proper coordination and documentation of affected individuals.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s historical role in South Africa’s liberation struggle, the minister emphasized the need for younger generations to understand the sacrifices made.

“Nigeria made great sacrifices towards the liberation struggle of South Africa, and this history must be properly understood by younger generations,” she stated.

Ojukwu expressed concern over the recurring nature of xenophobic violence, warning that the safety of Nigerian lives and businesses must not be compromised.

“We are deeply concerned about this repetitive wave of xenophobic attacks, which often resurface during political periods. This is unacceptable,” she added.
